What is Domain Name?

A domain name is a reserved name for your website. Like www. Mywebsite.com, www.Yahoo.com, www.Google.com, www.Facebook.com

A website is actually a set of web pages saved in a server computer. Each website is identified by network protocols by it’s domain name. Every domain name has some data associated with it which tells about the address where this website/domain is resides.

Look how it is done- a user wants to see any website puts a request into the browser’s url by typing the website’s name on it example  www.trisham.com the www service then identifies the address where the site has been hosted (the server computer), now this server is requested to send the data saved for this website (a web page). Server then sends the page directly to the client  (user’s computer)
You have to buy a desired domain name of your choice. There are some standards maintained for their prices and registry has been maintained for registered domain names and available domain names.

Domain name extensions
Domain names are associated with their extensions. The most commonly used extensions are .com, .org and .net

These domain extensions are calld general top level domains and presently come around $10 per year. Cost of all domain extensions may differ.

Other categories of domain extensions are country specific domains like .co.uk, .co.in etc. To see almost all categories/extensions please visit domain registration

Domain Registrars – There are many registrars providing domain registrations  against available domains. You can buy a domain from any service provider which further pays to any registrars and your domain’s registry is maintained by him. There can be many service providers  dealing with any registrars.

Domain Transfer -  You can transfer your existing domain to any registrar. Please understand  the meaning of transfer, people sometimes gets confused with the domain transfer and the hosting transfer.
If one wish to change his service provider where the domain had been purchased and hosted does not actually mean the domain transfer. Domain transfer refers to the transfer of domain from one registrar to another. If new service provider is using services from another domain registrar, and you also want to move your domain renewal services from him then a transfer process is required. Even in this situation transfer is not compulsory as the domain can be stayed at the existing registrar’s registry and hosting can be transferred to somewhere else.

The domain transfer process is quite complicated and requires many steps and authentication. Before doing this one must collect all relevant information on his own.  Mostly new service providers help new customers in transferring their domains to them in the sake of their businesses.
